While watching videos from major college and pro coaches can always benefit you and your team, sometimes the best lessons learned come from high school coaches who truly need to teach the game of basketball.
In this video by Norm Persin, you get the opportunity to learn some of the most important essentials in teaching the game of basketball. Along with this knowledge are a set of drills he has used to win 16 league championships and seven Ohio Coach of the Year awards.
Coach Persin's drills will help build your players' discipline and skill levels. Every drill is designed to allow players to work multiple skills at the same time. Additionally, Coach Persin makes sure the teaching points involved in each drill directly carry over to various game situations.
Every Day Fundamental Practice Drills
Coach Persin goes through some of his everyday essential drills. He starts off with an excellent fundamental drill, the Cut Drill, to get his athletes warmed up. With this drill, players work on a v-cut, basket cut, slash cut and continue to use their triple threat position throughout. All of these cuts and actions are aspects of Persin's offense.
Next, he adds a two-way drill in Trace Passing that teaches players to handle pressure when passing as well as put pressure on the passer when they're a defender. The Triangle Rotation drill has players work both offensive and defensive concepts, including help defense, defensive rotations and offensive attacks. Other drills are added throughout the presentation that cover a variety of areas such as closeouts, passing and shooting.
Coach Persin includes competitive drills that both teach players and give them a challenge, such as the 95 Points in 2 Minute drill. This drill puts players against the clock and forces them to hit shots that matter.
Throughout the presentation, Persin passes on insight into the "Why" question that players often have. He can easily answer these because all of his drills have a purpose that relates to the way he expects his kids to play. His thoughts on the game, on kids and on practice are fantastic and can help any new coach develop their philosophy; or remind any veteran coach as they look at how and why they do what they do.
One of Coach Persin's beliefs is his players should never be standing around. Most of his drills keep his players active and involved. He also strongly advises that the drills you use in practice should somehow match what you expect athletes to do in games.
In this video, you'll get everyday drills that can build your players and your team. You will also get some fantastic insight into how a program should be run. Coach Persin doesn't hold back his thoughts on developing basketball players and building a fundamentally sound team. Both the drills and the knowledge passed on are sure to help any team improve.
